On the interaction between thermalized neutrinos and cosmological gravitational waves above the electroweak unification scale

چکیده
Abstract We investigate the interaction between the cosmological relic neutrinos, and primordial gravitational waves entering the horizon before the electroweak phase transition, corresponding to observable frequencies today ν0 & 10 −5 Hz. We give an analytic formula for the traceless transverse part of the anisotropic stress tensor, due to weakly interacting neutrinos, and derive an integrodifferential equation describing the propagation of cosmological gravitational waves at these conditions. We find that this leads to a decrease of the wave intensity in the frequency region accessible to the LISA space interferometer, that is at the present the most promising way to obtain a direct detection of a cosmological gravitational wave. The absorbed intensity does not depend neither on the perturbation wavelength, nor on the details of neutrino interactions, and is affected only by the neutrino fraction fν . The transmitted intensity amounts to 88% for the standard value fν = 0.40523. An approximate formula for non-standard values of fν is given.

Electroweak Phase Transition and Neutrino Masses *
The presently observed cosmological baryon asymmetry has been finally determined at the time of the electroweak phase transition, when baryon and lepton number violating interactions fell out of thermal equilibrium. We discuss the thermodynamics of the phase transition based on the free energy of the SU(2) Higgs model at finite temperature, which has been studied in perturbation theory and latt...
متن کاملA Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves
Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...

متن کاملCurrent cosmological bounds on neutrino masses and relativistic relics
We combine the most recent observations of large-scale structure (2dF and SDSS galaxy surveys) and cosmic microwave anisotropies (WMAP and ACBAR) to put constraints on flat cosmological models where the number of massive neutrinos and of massless relativistic relics are both left arbitrary. We discuss the impact of each dataset and of various priors on our bounds. For the standard case of three...
